Persnickety Permits...

Okay!

Some updates. We have the approval of the:

Building Inspector

Plumbing Inspector

Fire Inspector. 

However, the Electrical/Wiring Inspector was NOT happy. As Chris' dad (thanks again!) had noticed, much of the electrical work was rough at best. Before we can get an occupancy permit, the following work has to be done:

Finish electrical work and tidy up wiring. 

Reinforce staircase

Flip around basement door (so that it doesn't open up into the upstairs staircase!)

Put railings on the basement stairs. 

Everything but the electrical has already been done. We are extending our agreement by a week to give the bank time to get the electrical stuff done now that the building stuff has been taken care of. The best part of all of this is that we had been planning, mentally and financially, on doing much of this exact work ourselves - and now we're not!! The bank is required to sell the house occupyable and up to code, which means that they are responsible for making the repairs. So far (knock on wood) the bank has been very pleasant and seems to want us in the house as soon as possible. At this point, we are still planning to close and move the 24th of July, but can still bail out of the deal as of July 13th. How bad can that be. 

And oh, by the way - our total cost at this point is about $800 between a home inspection and mortgage fees. Before we've even sealed the deal! Outrageous.
